The jungle vegetation and rocky hollows of the Yucatan form the adventurous backdrop to this new fashion feature by photographer Jim Mangan, shot for the forthcoming issue of Japan-based Huge magazine. “We stayed in the town of Tulum, away from the upscale and secluded beachside resorts,” says Mangan. “It allowed us to meet people really immersing themselves in the culture and its surroundings.” The multinational cast of models was styled by Yohei Usami and assembled locally, where the crew had some help from an Argentinian swimmer and climber named Eugenia who became their guide and introduced them to the private 60-acre property and monkey sanctuary. Known for his free-spirited depictions of youth embracing the natural world, LA-based Mangan’s work has been exhibited internationally at such venues as The Hole in New York and Los Angeles’ Martha Otero, and will feature in an upcoming show at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. “I like anything I’m shooting that has a human element to have a feeling of being mystical, of being in another place, another time,” he muses. “It’s about taking you to somewhere that’s a new start, a new beginning. Hopefully when you see the photos you realize that anything is possible.”
