Indie music is a known font of fashion muses: from groundbreaking grand dames such as Kim Gordon and Courtney Love, to more recently Alison Mosshart, Bat for Lashes’ Natasha Khan and Florence Welch. Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino, long noted for her eclectic wardrobe—which swings from equestrian prep (she’s an accomplished show jumper) to freewheeling boho to haute polished—is again in the spotlight, this time as the star of New York-based eco label Bodkin’s new lookbook. “Many of the women who I look up to as both stylish creatures and human beings are musicians,” admits Bodkin designer Eviana Hartman, who collaborated on a prior lookbook with The Fiery Furnaces' Eleanor Friedberger. Of her new muse she notes: “[Makino] worked at the Comme des Garçons boutique in the 90s—it sounds like a fashion fantasy to me.” The multitalented designer (who moonlights as the drummer for Brooklyn dream-pop quartet Open Ocean in addition to previously working as a fashion writer at publications including Vogue and Nylon) credits Rei Kawakubo and Japanese design as pervasive influences, and confesses to having a “sentimental attachment” to 90s minimalism. She is constantly looking for ways to make the company more sustainable—frequently molding collections in response to the materials she's able to source from larger companies' leftovers. This season, an emphasis on organic cotton shirting results in a decidedly pure feeling collection, an easy match for Makino's effortless style.
