The click-clack of high heels fades as guests of the Christian Dior couture show disperse from the tent. One editor, Daria Shapovalova, remains behind to film the introduction to her fashion week broadcast––but she is distracted. Following models still wearing John Galliano’s magnificent rainbow-hued dresses into the Rodin Museum gardens, camera crew in tow, she happens upon a scene from a fashion fairytale: legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier directs a group of supermodels as Vogue’s Edward Enninful and team arranges the taffeta and organza petals of the gowns, like so many flowers on a lawn. It is these chance encounters that make fashion week so thrilling for glam-guerilla media personality Shapovalova, who hosts the popular Ukrainian television program Fashion Week With Daria Shapovalova—which broadcasts to over 20 million people—as well as contributes to Russian Vogue. She is never without a camera, finding that some of the best interviews are captured randomly when designers and models are not surrounded by bodyguards and press. “We always carry something with us, even in the bathrooms, because you never know whom you might meet in there,” she laughs. For her TV show, she covers all the women’s fashion weeks throughout the year, in the four fashion capitals of New York, London, Milan and Paris, as well as those in her native Kiev. But she especially enjoys the couture shows. “They are amazingly beautiful and elaborate—the clothing, the staging…” she enthuses. As for the relevance of couture in the 21st century, however, she is more circumspect: “Everything is so immediate in this era of Facebook and Twitter, but a couture gown still takes two weeks to make, involving many skilled hands. They are masterpieces, and represent something very stable that preserves the important tradition of craftsmanship.”
