Directors Fran Colombatti and Tomas Quartino, known creatively as 1985, have written and directed a short film that presents the tumultuous dynamics between two couples one evening. Filmed in Argentina, The Property Concept of Relationships showcases the country’s rich culinary heritage. From giant crabs to tangy passion fruit, crisp asparagus and red peppers, this film is as much about the couples’ love affair with food as it is about their love for each other.

The story begins with a couple preparing for a dinner party. While preparing vegetables the woman accidentally chops off her ring finger. Not one to let anything go to waste, her partner cooks up the amputated digit and dares his friend to take a bite during the dinner party later that evening. What happens next is a complex, coded conversation concerning love, ownership and fidelity.

The title of the film comes from an interview question put to John Lenon in 1971 about relationships. The musician talks about the dangers of loving someone so much, in this case, his partner Yoko Ono, that you want to “possess them to death.” The idea of possession was translated by directors Colombatti and Quartino into this figurative short movie that shows the interview question is still valid in the twenty-first century: will we ever get away from the “property” concept of relationships?
