“Mayonnaise and love are phenomena produced by chemical reactions,” says Iska Lupton, the witty director and writer behind this delectable short film. “I find romance in mayonnaise’s chemistry. It is a heterogeneous combination of substances that curdles if not handled carefully; an evocative analogy for love.”
The delicious condiment—as a visual metaphor for the alchemy of love—is made from simple ingredients; in this case, egg yolks, vinegar, Dijon mustard and olive oil (preferably handled by a topless kitchen helper). With attention and care it doesn’t take much to create the perfect flavor.
“I wanted to conceive a piece that combines many universal pleasures in one creamy scene; a symphony in yellow using mayonnaise as a vehicle for idle philosophy,” says the director. “When absorbed in a process, our subconscious thoughts come forth. This inspired the stream of conscious-style storyline in which the volatile voice can always return to the recipe for safety.
“I’d like it to serve as a reminder that we should do things mindfully and that even our condiments are tender and complex. To produce mayonnaise by hand is a unique thing. It’s well worth the patience.”
