It was an internship with art-pop outfit Fischerspooner that landed photographer Luke Gilford in the director’s chair for Casey Spooner’s new video “Spanish Teenager.” Gilford documented the band’s 2009 “Between Worlds” tour in a series of prismatic images that showed at MoMA New York, and caught the imagination of its frontman. “[Spooner] sent me twenty of my pictures and said, ‘Do you think you can make a video that looks and feels like this?’” Gilford recalls. His answer, which debuts on NOWNESS today, sees washed-out seaside vignettes of an all-ages cast (Gilford’s friends and mother) projected onto the bodies of naked, real-life Adonis figures. “I wanted a kind of sun-drenched, hallucinatory, melodic, metaphysical feeling,” Spooner says. With additional vocals from the Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, the track is the first single off of Spooner’s debut solo album Adult Contemporary, a rock-leaning record that marks a departure from Fischerspooner’s electro-clash.
