Belgian-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui captures a haunting duet between Royal Ballet of Flanders dancers Drew Jacoby and Matt Foley—based on his 2015 ballet about displacement, love and memory. Here, the dance visionary talks about the film he co-directed with Woodkid, aka Yoann Lemoine, for the French musician and visual artist’s melancholic track, Land of All:
“It's about interdependency, sharing and carrying each other forward, I felt that the song connected to a pas de deux I had been working on in which falling and recovery was a recurring theme; and I felt that the gender ambiguity and balance between surrendering and holding on gracefully would be a way to re-contextualise the lyrics.
“Working on the project with the dancers was a pure joy. Even if there is a starkness to the actual choreography, there is also a gentle focus that feels like something between tai chi and straight forward partner work in contemporary ballet.”
