“During the pandemic, there has been a lot to feel bleak about, so I decided to make something bright. Something fun,” says British filmmaker and photographer Martha Treves. “Something that would make people want to dance.”
We Came Here to Dance is a response to the pandemic reducing the opportunities we have to enjoy music and club culture in the way we used to. Treves captures the euphoria, joy, and release we once felt on the dancefloor and transports it to a new environment. London-based producer, DJ, and vinyl peddler Will Lister also provides the electronic soundtrack for this short film.
Treves also collaborated with Emily Orme—a movement director who crafts choreography that compliments people’s natural body language—to create the free-spirited dance sequences we see in We Came Here To Dance.
“Now with June 21st in sight,” says Treves, referring to the UK prime minister’s roadmap out of lockdown, “with events, clubs and the electronic music scene preparing to re-open, it looks like our future will be filled with dancing.”
