From the Beach Boys in the 60s to Oasis in the 90s, the chemistry of siblings has long made for explosive melodic combinations. In this tradition Chicago natives and Brooklyn residents Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger garnered international acclaim with the release of their debut album Gallowsbird’s Bark under their musical moniker The Fiery Furnaces. Since this bluesy debut they have positioned themselves as the cerebral members of the indie music pack, releasing a succession of records that push the boundaries of the concept album. Lately working on her debut solo album, Eleanor has come up with a playlist for NOWNESS (available on iTunes) that features a selection of her heroes. “These guys are the inspiration for the music I’ve been writing all summer,” she explains. “Fingers crossed that my record will give someone some remote but similar feeling that I have while listening to these songs.”
