For a new collaboration with NOWNESS and London’s National Gallery, filmmaker Marie Schuller was enlisted to create an artistic response to the cultural institute's landmark exhibition, Monochrome: Painting in Black and White. “Using only light and shape, we wanted to demonstrate the impact and beauty of a reduced color palette,” explains Schuller. 

Working with Lutz Förster, former artistic director of Pina Bausch’s dance company Tanztheater Wuppertal and her collaborator for over 34 years, Schuller turns her lens on the dancer’s enigmatic movements through the gallery’s halls and exhibition spaces. With charismatic voice and flowing gestures, Förster serves as our guide through a surreal black-and-white world where different artistic practices are explored and brought to life.

The exhibition itself Monochrome: Painting in Black and White runs at The National Gallery 30 October 2017 – 18 February 2018 and includes works from: Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt and Hendrik Goltzius to Cy Twombly, Gerhard Richter and Olafur Eliasson
