“What could be better than giving a polka dot its own set of feet, and a heart its own set of eyes?” asks Molly Schiot, describing the sprightly characters she created for her animated film inspired by Miu Miu’s 2011 Resort collection. The charming piece is the outcome of a project for which online creative network The IdeaLists, in partnership with NOWNESS, sent out an open call to directors to submit treatments for a fashion short. An LA-based artist and filmmaker, Schiot’s work involves a range of mediums, from photography and film to animation and illustration. Recently, she made a moving birthday card with sparkles rising from its pages for music producer Mark Ronson, and an illustrated retrospective short for Levi’s that riffs on the brand’s iconic red tab. Schiot’s treatment for today’s story was chosen from scores of submissions for its simple yet engaging concept of animating the spirit of Miu Miu’s colorful, graphic prints. “[The] collection has so many of my favorite things. Whether it's the simplicity, the decade, or my favorite colors––turquoise, black and red––it's so uplifting and beautiful that it almost takes on its own life,” explains Schiot. Crafting the naive shapes out of Lucite, the colors were activated through a backlit projection. “I love to work and make things that feel like they were created by actual hands,” she says. “Of course there is technology involved, but the more it can be eliminated the better––I want to feel personality behind a project.” Discover Miu Miu's vibrant 2011 Resort collection here.
