Nestled in the 8-foot would-be alley between two Bayswater townhouses sits Gap House, the brainchild of London-based studio Pitman Tozer Architects, and home to its co-founder, Luke Tozer.

Commended for its eco status, which makes use of otherwise unusable land in the increasingly cramped capital, the house’s entrance hall traces a narrow gap between two Georgian townhouses—hence its name—before revealing its L-shaped layout with an airy living space in what was previously the gardens of surrounding buildings.

Here, Tozer talks the creative challenge of tackling a difficult project and how he let light lead the design of the unorthodox site.
