For the latest episode in NOWNESS's series My Place, American multi-disciplinarian JD Samson invited director Barbara Anastacio into the Williamsburg apartment she shares with partner Ariel Sims and their cat Dirty.

Known originally as one-third of Le Tigre, the feminist punk band led by Riot Grrrl founder Kathleen Hanna, the Brooklynite now fronts MEN, a music and live performance collective that continues where Le Tigre left off, highlighting queer and gender issues through a unique blend of punk-infused electro pop.

Born in northwestern Ohio to artist parents, Samson’s creative output ranges from performance art (she co-founded Dykes Can Dance, who organise dance-themed public 'interventions' across New York) to print media (including JD's Lesbian Calendar, made to heighten visibility of the butch woman). An even less definable project, done in collaboration with American art dealer Jeffrey Deitch, saw Samson drive a rainbow-colored RV across the US in search of a “lesbian utopia” (spoiler: she didn't find it. Trick is, you have to make it for yourself).
