The three faculties of the mind conceived by Francis Bacon–memory, imagination, reason–became the maxim for (and title of) Jonas Lindström’s Directors' Cuts entry. “It’s what actually happens visually when you are roaming through your memories,” explains the Berlin-based photographer and filmmaker. The slow-motion, abstract piece dips into the 20-year archive of avant-garde German fashion designer Kostas Murkudis, who will next year be honored with a retrospective at the Frankfurt Museum for Modern Art. “They say the perfect film for the web is 50 seconds long, but I wanted to create a certain pace,” says Lindström of his decision not to edit it down for quick consumption. Featuring a myriad of actors, from old friends to street-cast faces, the director’s passion project is accompanied by a score from contemporary German composer Nils Frahm.

Check back tomorrow for a Director’s Cut from Jonas Ackerlund.
