Actor-director Gabriel Sunday’s Hi How Are You Daniel Johnston is a hallucinogenic portrayal of the outsider artist, who was first made famous when his "Jeremiah the Innocent" frog illustration graced a T-shirt worn by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain.
Executive produced by Lana Del Rey, Hi How Are You… is swept along by her haunting cover of Johnston’s track “Some Things Last a Long Time”, while the above excerpt sees Soko in the guise of the artist's teenage infatuation, Laurie.
“Daniel agreed it would be a trip to film two versions of himself from different eras meeting inside his head,” says Sunday, who plays the youthful Daniel in the film. “He ends up giving his younger self advice. And it’s advice that every artist should hear. Who knows more about surviving insanity and the creative struggle than Daniel Johnston?”
