For over forty years, Stanley Dorfman and Barbara Flood have been in a relationship, despite never living in the same time zone. Dorfman, a film director, producer and co-creator of iconic British music show Top of the Pops lives in Los Angeles, while actress and model Barbara Flood lives in New York City. Here, New York-based director Rachel Fleit talks about the story behind the film:

“I had been wondering if it's possible to be deeply in love and partnered without self-abandonment. At the same time, I had been staring at a Susan Sontag quote on my bathroom wall: 'Can I love non-possessively, permissively, without withdrawing myself, setting up my own defenses and strategic retreats, on one hand, or reducing the amount and intensity of my love, on the other?' I thought about Barbara Flood and Stanley Dorfman, my friends, who have been in a long distance relationship forever and who are the most charming, interesting, self-possessed people I know.

“I started filming them separately in New York and Los Angeles and when they were together in their respective homes. What struck me about them at first is that they literally have separate lives; they are such individuals on so many levels, and when they come together they are the most dynamic duo, deeply bonded and truly in love.

“Their relationship is modern, cool and aspirational. I made this film to celebrate these two immensely authentic, wonderful people, to shine a light on a different way of doing things, another way of being together, alone and in love.”
