Actor Samantha Morton talks about the personal experiences that informed her writing of Anywhere Out of this World, a short film directed by former Jesus and Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart:
“The first film I remember seeing at the cinema was 2001: A Space Odyssey. It blew my mind and punctured my heart forever—my love and need of film started then.
"I had a very traumatic childhood; I was abused from a very young age both sexually and physically, with a lot of neglect and poverty thrown in for good measure. Seeing and being exposed to film when I was young was an immensely powerful healing experience. It changed my outcome. My forecast now being bright with some sunny showers instead of the usual way I’ve seen loved ones grow.
"Self-harm, repeated cycles of abuse, prison, prostitution, and children being taken into care was what I was told would happen to me. For that and everything that has happened since I have Stanley Kubrick to thank, for it was his film that changed my life. Douglas has made such an incredible film that highlights this moment for me. Sensitive yet brutal. Poetic and cinematic."
