Perspective is a constant that is never stationary; a force in a continual state of transformation under the influence of our environment, our experiences, and the dialogues enforced upon us by others. Exploring Western Sydney as a reflection of multiculturalism in modern Australia, Window is the third and final feature from the Latitudes series, assembled and commissioned by Powerhouse Parramatta. Considering the window as a framing device for personal experience, as well as a visual cue denoting entrapment, the film plays with physical and metaphysical concepts of perspective through multidisciplinary contributions from artists connected to the landscape of Western Sydney – with spoken word from singer, songwriter, and rapper A.GIRL, choreography by movement director Sela Vai, and an original score by Mo Aung.
As a metaphor for visions of the district’s past, present, and future, and the windows of opportunity afforded to some, and denied to others, the feature investigates the reinforcement of class dynamics and inequalities when viewed with a narrow perspective. Through the artists’ responses to objects from the Sydney museum’s collection – cameras throughout history, traditional and contemporary adornments, shackles, and stained glass – Window considers the distortions applied by different lenses, and the impact these can have on shifting understanding.
Sela Vai’s original choreography sees dancers interacting with the architecture and infrastructure of Western Sydney, and the intersection between dance culture and sports culture that courses through it. Highlighting the nuances of a district in a state of transformation – akin to the perspectives born from it – Window creates a lyrical and visual dialogue that questions the means of control forced upon us, and how these can, conversely, serve as a significant escape route when overturned.
