Under the streets of New York’s Lower East Side lies a new project straight out of science fiction. A former trolley terminal adjacent to the Essex Street subway station is in the process of being turned into the world’s first underground park—the Lowline.
In a new film from Swedish filmmaker Petter Ringbom, known for his 2012 documentary feature The Russian Winter, LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang voices a walk through the garden lab and gives a run down of the future park’s expected features—from a sound designed entrance by her bandmate James Murphy to reflective technology that will flood the one-acre underground location with sunlight.
