British artist Oliver Payne presents this stylishly thought provoking film about cult-like Japanese fashion brand Cav Empt. Through playful visual studies of the elusive brand's clothing, amplified by a soundtrack from Jackson Bailey, Payne explores the concept of the ‘Spread Mind’ first developed by Italian philosopher Riccardo Manzotti, which argues that consciousness is literally real—a physical thing. The artist-filmmaker, whose work has been exhibited at the ICA and Serpentine galleries, riffs off this theory by posing the enigmatic question: ’Where does Cav Empt happen?’

First premiered during Men’s Fashion Week at Spazio Maiocchi, joint founded by Carhartt WIP and street culture company Slam Jam, the work asserts fashion’s similarities, and differences, to art. Speaking about directing this intellectually compelling film, Payne explains: “The extremely important business of discussing Future, the direction of the human condition and the very nature of consciousness itself, is best left in the hands of people like Cav Empt. Only Cav Empt would create the sort of space in which an artist like me can communicate these ideas. Now is the time to make films about shorts and gloves. Don’t you see?"
