Since their debut at Design Miami/Basel last year, the Haas Brothers’ surreal and sexy furniture and set design has earned a client list which includes Versace, Lady Gaga, Peter Marino and Ace Hotel. “Our process is a combination of curiosity, tenacity and freedom,” says Niki, whose interest lies in shapes and sculpture, while Simon is drawn to experimenting with surfaces and materials, such as the ‘cockscomb accretion’ process captured in today's film by Columbine Goldsmith. “We are very fluid in the way that we encourage and edit each other.” Below, Niki muses on the LA-based brothers’ coltish drive to create.

If our work was a piece of music, it’d be “Declaration of Dub” by King Tubby.
He analyzes songs, finds the most effective parts, and emphasizes them. He took his craft very seriously without taking himself too seriously.

‘Design chemists’ is a pretty apt description of us.
We are inspired by natural processes; not copying natural forms necessarily, but trying to understand the reasons why things form. We are also very interested in making forms that are relatable—we strive to make people feel empathy for objects.

We’re currently working on a sex room for the upcoming Basel Fair.
It’s a fully non-functional immersive piece centered on human sexuality. It’s the most abstract piece we’ve worked on so far and we’re really enjoying it.
