Over 4,000 miles away from Father Christmas’s traditional home of Lapland, gallerist James Cohan has opened an artistic Santa’s Workshop at his exhibition space in Shanghai. Here, alongside overtly childlike seasonal offerings from Olaf Breuning, Mariko Mori, Carsten Holler, Luc Tuymans and Laurie Anderson is a motorized steel Christmas tree created by playfully macabre artist Shi Jinsong—a darker comment on the season to be merry. Visitors are invited to sit under its metal leaves and write notes to Santa on cards specially created by local Chinese artists.
