Since she joined the World Tour of surfing as a wildcard at just 17, Stephanie Gilmore, now 29, has lived most of her life on the road. In 2016 she put down roots in the historic surf mecca of Malibu, and in the latest episode of My Place, the much-lauded Australian sportswoman takes us through the surfboards, trophies, art and ephemera of her "country club for mermaids".

Says episode director Barbara Anastacio: “In the advent of some kind of natural disaster, I would want to have someone like Steph by my side. She definitely has this carefree aura about her that makes everything seem effortless... She's also kind of the anti-My Place subject because she literally could be at home anywhere with only her surfboard and swimsuit.”

Stephanie’s style and skill in the water started a revolution in women’s surfing, forcing brands and sponsors to raise salaries, prize money and awareness, and inspiring a new generation of ferocious female surfers to follow suit. Her crossover into the worlds of fashion, music and film—award-winning doc Stephanie in the Water and surf-dance short film series The Water Dancer to name a few—brought new audiences to a once overlooked sport and has earned her prestigious Sportswoman of the Year accolades, as well as high-profile artistic and commercial collaborations all over the world.
