Performed by six vocalists from the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Song Mirror is a new composition written by installation artist Doug Aitken and brought to life inside the Mirage Gstaad—the latest in a series of enigmatic mirrored buildings which he has also installed in the desert near Palm Springs and inside a former bank in Detroit.
Situated in the frozen expanse of the Swiss Alps, Mirage Gstaad is in a constant state of flux as light refracts around sound, the outside comes in, subject turns to object, and nature becomes architecture.
Members of the chorale group sing abstracted and hypnotic phrases, such as “is anyone listening,” “you know more than I know,” and “sunset.” While wandering through the house of mirrors their voices create a sonic landscape that illustrates the transcendental properties of music.
