Actress Rinko Kikuchi, environmentalist David de Rothschild and free diving world champion Guillaume Néry muse on the briny deep for the Seven Seas Sound Mix, a series of audio pieces accompanied by videos and photographs designed to raise awareness for World Oceans Day. A collaboration between beauty brand La Mer and audio collective Soundwalk, the mix also enlists designer Philippe Starck, French actress Mélanie Laurent, British sailor Samantha Davies and Chinese actor Liu Ye. “I wanted to approach people that had some kind of relationship with the sea, not only from an activist point of view but artistically or in a human sense,” says Stephan Crasneanscki, who founded Soundwalk in 2002. “All of them have a story and use the sea as an inspiration, a cause or a creative partner.” Director Spike Jonze filmed Kikuchi frolicking in the sunny, calm waters of the Mediterranean off Ibiza, while contemplating her native Japan. “Because the country is surrounded by water we get lots of food from the sea,” she says. “It’s impossible to separate the sea from the Japanese culture.” Seven Seas Sound Mix is available to download as an immersive iPhone and iPad application launching today on iTunes.
