You've read Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp-Muhl (together known as The Ghost of a Saber Toothed Tiger) talk about big lungs and men's underwear (here). But below we share the rest of our "newlyweds" interview with the musical duo, in which they answer questions on behalf of each other, accompanied by new track "Jardin du Luxembourg" taken from GOASTT's new album Acoustic Sessions.
Does Sean/Charlotte see a line between your romance and GOASTT?
Sean: Charlotte can be a little Napoleon when it comes to being productive together. I doubt she knows how to have a relationship without being intertwined on some creative level. For her, writing a song or composing an image is the most romantic thing we can do... I feel the same way, although she's younger and therefore has more stamina and less empathy.
Charlotte: Poor Sean, there really is no line between our love life and our band. We run our record label from our kitchen, and we wrote that record in our closet. Our living room's a recording studio, for pete's sake, and we have a very open home to all our friends and co-conspirators. Lately we've needed more time for romance because it's been all administrative work and interviews, but three years ago he told me if we didn't fuse our lives we would be pulled in opposite directions... Still, I think this summer we might 'disappear' for a while to nurture our partnership outside of the band.
Speaking of Napoleon, if cast as any historic figure (real or fictional) who would Sean/Charlotte be?
Sean: Funny, because we just shot a video the day after Halloween where Charlotte was playing Joan of Arc.
Charlotte: And Sean was playing Che Guevara, even shaved his beard to match. Well there you have it.
What is Sean/Charlotte's consummate meal?
Sean: Charlotte swears by copious amounts of watermelon.
Charlotte: Sean loves milk, it's so cute, like he's a little kid. He'll just have a carton of milk for dinner.
What is Sean/Charlotte's idea of a great date?
Sean: For her, probably running a marathon.
Charlotte: Oh, cuddling, definitely. He is an Olympic cuddler. But I always get antsy after a while...
What is Sean/Charlotte's favorite scent?
Sean: She loves when I wear Vanilla Tobacco by Tom Ford. Drives the ladies wild, wink wink, know what I mean, eh, ehh?
Charlotte: He won't admit it, but he likes the smell of my glorious un-showered hair. Don't you, Sean? Mmmm, fleas and all.
What was foremost on Sean/Charlotte's mind when GOASTT was recording this intimate acoustic album?
Sean: We recorded most of it in the country, so she was probably just impatient to go run around outside after every take. It was beautiful late summer weather and we were surrounded by trees and rabbits.
Charlotte: He was foremost thinking about recording techniques, like using just one old ribbon microphone for the guitar and vocals at the same time, re-amping things for that old record feel, and playing with tape delay. (I'm a little trigger happy with the latter.) We had both just discovered this English band called White Noise from the 60's that used a lot of progressive recording/editing techniques that inspired us, even though we had to work within the confines of a purely acoustic palette.Does Sean/Charlotte believe in ghosts?
Sean: She used to be all esoteric when I met her, dancing naked on rooftops and communing with the fairies. Now she's Little Miss Scientific. If it ain't in Discover magazine, it doesn't exist to her.
Charlotte: Sean grew up his whole life with talk of ghosts and spirits and mysticism, so his way of rebelling has been growing into a pragmatist... But secretly we are both flower children who are praying for the aliens to land! And anyone who's ever worked with electrical instruments knows poltergeists exist, at the very least...
