For this video from Barcelona-born singer and songwriter Rosalía—who is breathing new life into the traditional flamenco genre—the musician led emerging filmmaker Ignasi Monreal into a cemetery chapel during a break in the filming of another of her tracks. This atmospheric setting was the scene for an electrifying moment, which is captured in Monreal’s elegiac and unprompted film.

The Spanish director explains how Rosalía, with her singing, “gifted the crew with a raw and unexpected performance. We felt it was essential to document it exactly as we saw it—pure and powerful.”

The musical artist’s unrehearsed moment is based on an original song by Granada-born flamenco icon Enrique Morente, whose lyrics were drawn from the influential poems of historic Spanish writer San Juan de la Cruz. The film was produced by PinkSalt & Collateral, in collaboration with Canada.
