The word “east” emerged from the name eostre, the Germanic goddess of the dawn. Today, not just geographically but culturally there is a sense of a new creative dawn in the east. SFMOMA has created an exhibition of 30 contemporary Japanese, Korean and Chinese artists that explore new trajectories in contemporary photography. From Rinko Kawauchi’s haunting personal images of Japan, to Luo Dan’s photographic journey across China and Bohnchang Koo's examination of Korean architecture, these images look at the changing definition of eastern landscape, society and art.
