For her provocative short film PANTIES, director Marissa Velez opens up conversation about women’s relationship with this essential piece of clothing. Exploring the word’s connotations and the reactions it elicits, the Brooklyn-based filmmaker engages with women from diverse backgrounds on film, discussing how their undergarments reflect their personal identities and experiences.
Shot by cinematographer Pete Konzcal, PANTIES was captured on 16mm film, for its humanistic touch, and the quiet respect it commands. Intentionally diverted away from the male or female gaze, the camera framing and movement became an important factor, allowing Velez to communicate an intimate subject without voyeurism, but through expressive and emotional means.
