To mark Sir David Attenborough's 85th birthday today, we invited fashion blogger Roxana Altamirano of Nerd Boyfriend to curate a shopping mood board inspired by the BBC legend's professorial twist on classic English sartorial. “His clothes reflect his passion as a naturalist," Altamirano says. "A lot of brown corduroy, almost-moccasins and neutral colors—quite understated.” Celebrating his 60th anniversary at the network next year, Attenborough will be the focus of a major TV retrospective in 2012; his latest series about life in the Arctic and Antarctic, Frozen Planet, airs this fall. The younger brother of actor and director Lord Richard Attenborough, the broadcaster is best known for his landmark Life series, a ten-chapter chronicle of evolution. He is the latest unexpected fashion hero (following Jim Henson and Arthur Ashe) to be honored by Altamirano since she launched Nerd Boyfriend in early 2009 and began deconstructing wardrobes with a "get the look" guide. “I search for photographs that really reflect the character in the picture,” says Altamirano. "It could be a wardrobe that breaks the rules of fashion, but it doesn’t matter as long as it has a place in that person’s life and reflects what they love to do."
