When photographer Erik Madigan Heck set his sights on a collaboration with Rodarte for the 11th edition of his luxe publication Nomenus (a quarterly comprising photographs and essays that takes its name from “No menus” signs taped to the doors of New York City apartment buildings), he did what few would dare: called the Californian duo directly to pitch his concept. Almost immediately—and in an unprecedented move for any brand—designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy pulled the entire collection from scheduled editorial shoots so Heck could document it exclusively. Today NOWNESS premieres the resulting decadent images, which were shot in an antique-filled mansion in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, an environment in line with the sisters' nostalgic wood-grain-print pants and lace blouses for spring 2011. Since launching the quarterly in 2007 at the age of 23, Heck has amassed an impressive list of allies in the art and fashion realms: Ann Demeulemeester, Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquierè, Elizabeth Peyton and Lucian Freud among them. The bespoke collaborations between photographers and designers distinguishes Nomenus from prevalent mainstream glossies—as does its pricing plan: though the publication is released in a limited-edition format ranging from $6,000 to $7,000, it’s available online for free.
