When Movement posted their first demo online in 2012, it was immediately played on local radio in their home of Sydney. That same night someone called Pav emailed them, saying he liked what they were doing. “I had to Google his name,” says founder Sean Walker, “and I saw that he’s the founder of Modular records. I was like ‘Oh shit!’” Modular is home to Tame Impala and Cut Copy, and described by Sean as “the most relevant record label in Australia.” Impressed by the band’s ‘evocative soul,’ label boss Stephen ‘Pav' Pavlovic duly signed up Sean, co-founder Jesse Ward and singer Lewis Wade.
Inspired by the theme of ‘firsts,’ NOWNESS paired Modular up with director Jessica Sarah Rinland to create a video for “Like Lust,” the band's last activity for a while as they look to use 2015 to hide away and make their long-awaited debut album.
Sean and Jesse were first moved to make music by a love of the disparate sounds of Stevie Wonder and Aphex Twin—a good guide to the shadowy sound-picture of after-hours Sydney painted on this track, taken from their debut EP “Movement,” co-produced by The Weeknd collaborator Illangelo. The film uses natural history footage—human desire, spermatozoa, even cellular division—and sensual contemporary shots to dazzling effect. Is it mitosis or meiosis going on in there? Hard to tell, but either way, reproduction is a theme entirely at one with the band’s carnal sound.
