“I’m very into transformation,” explains stylist and artist Masha Orlov of her latest collaborative project, a stop-motion film about a party gone awry incorporating over 2000 still images, produced with makeup artist Andrea Helgadottir and photographer Silja Magg. Orlov herself stars in the photo-series/film alongside Victor de Souza muse Michelle Harper and India Menuez, who Orlov describes as “one of the coolest 17-year-olds around.” Orlov, who has styled for publications including Self-Service, Purple, Jalouse and V, tapped the wardrobes of her fashionable cohorts (as well as her own closet) for the decadent costumes, which incorporate vintage designs from Mara Hoffman, threeASFOUR and Jil Sander. The project was originally conceived as an art film and photo story for the second issue of TIWIMUTA, a super-luxurious annual magazine masterminded by maverick fashion designer and Marc Jacobs consultant Andre Walker. But Ratatat’s Mike Stroud (Helgadottir’s husband) liked the film so much that he decided to set his band’s song “Imperials” (from 2008's LP3) to a simplified version of the film, which will be released soon. Masha Orlov and Andre Walker discuss the printed page and obsessive personalities here.
