By inhabiting the architecture of a given space, Lili Reynaud-Dewar integrates the social with the aesthetic, at the cost of erasing herself. And, for the French multidisciplinary artist, the hotel room stands as a central pillar of her artistic interventions, a space both intimate and anonymous, solitary yet in the continual presence of others.
Exhibited in 2022, her video installation ‘I invited men into my hotel room and asked them very personal questions about their lives’ built upon conversational fragments collected at the Hôtel du Pré in Paris. Now, entering October 2023, a diary-like narrative unfolds with ‘Hello, My Name Is Lili and We Are Many’ – a new solo show at the Palais de Tokyo, told through hotel rooms in Paris, and the emotional and professional relationships of the artist.
Coinciding with the opening, Lili Reynaud-Dewar invites Art Basel to Hôtel Royal Élysées in Paris’ 16th arrondissement, discussing impermanence and intimacy from her hotel room for a new episode of Meet the artists. From the confines of her temporary residence, director Virgile Texier retraces her artistic journey, influences, and inspirations, exploring the subtext of the hotel environment as a starting point for social interactions led by performance, sculpture, video, and installation.
‘Hello, My Name Is Lili and We Are Many’ is at Palais de Tokyo, Paris until 7 January 2024.
Lili Reynaud-Dewar is represented by Clearing (New York, Brussels) and Layr (Vienna).
