London-based Swedish director Bertil Nilsson talks about his latest film, Light Oscillation by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, a portrait of Swiss-Filipino circus artist and dancer Mario Español, set to an original score by Dutch producer and composer Dylan Viset:
“Mario and I got together to experiment with how the interaction between the tracing speed of a computer-controlled projector and the frame rate of a camera can create different effects. Mario’s body became the canvas in a black void, and his movement was improvised in response to the patterns we came up with.
"The title is a bit of a mouthful, it’s a reference to the laser projection. LASER was originally an acronym—the A stood for "amplification," which isn’t accurate for most laser sources, so it’s a bit of a geeky joke that the more accurate acronym would actually be LOSER. I also found it ironic that the term 'loser' could be used by some to describe someone dancing on their own in a club setting—though I wouldn’t agree."
