“I’m deeply into animal symbolism and primitive energy,” says Lia Ices, the Sonoma, California-based singer-songwriter whose single “Creature” was animated by Tom Jean Webb, aka Birdman. “Tom’s work was really similar to my album artwork both aesthetically and also on a profound level," she continues. "I always wanted to make an animated video, but it hadn’t presented itself yet in a way that went along with my ideology.”
The pair met through friends ahead of the release of Lia's latest album, Ices, by the cult American indie label Jagjaguwar, and featuring collaborations with mercurial hip hop producer Clams Casino. “The song celebrates this wild woman archetype that is connected to the Earth and the senses,” she explains. “She knows herself and is confident. I think that’s something Tom I and both celebrate in our work.”
What is your spirit animal?
Lia Ices: During my first summer in California I found an abandoned baby owl in the field by our house. Since then the owl has been my spirit animal (shamans say your spirit animal finds you). They are hyper-sensitive observers and hunters and spend most of their life in flight, kind of like me.
What mythological creature fascinates you most?
LI: The centaur. It is the embodiment of contrast and also the symbol of my sign, Sagittarius.
If you were reincarnated what animal would you like to come back as?
LI: A blue whale. I’d love a lifetime in the ocean, if I was the biggest thing in there and could still sing.
What animal best represents love to you?
LI: A puppy.
