For this year’s Loop, an annual Barcelona-based event showcasing video art from around the world, Berlin-based artist Niklas Goldbach will present his film Land of the Sun. Here, he talks about his filmic exploration of California City, soundtracked by “Une Ville Silencieuse” and “Départ” by French electronica producer College:
“Land of the Sun was filmed in California City and focuses on the visible architectural leftovers of one of the world's biggest failed urban planning projects. Incorporated in 1965 and located in the Mojave Desert, the city is the third largest in the state of California.
"Growth did not happen anywhere close to what the planners expected, and to this day a vast grid of crumbling paved roads intended to lay out residential blocks scar expansive stretches, extending well beyond the developed area of the city, which houses a population of around 14,000.”
