“There’s enough straightforward, intelligent pop music that can just lay itself out really fast, in a sugar-hit kind of way,” says British musician and filmmaker Adam Bainbridge, aka Kindness. “People enjoy it but there’s enough of that already. So I might as well do something that is not so lazer guided. It takes a minute for the things to come into focus, and the density of it is part of the pleasure.”

In celebration of Kindness’s sophomore album, Otherness, friends and collaborators Robyn, Dev Hynes and Tawiah joined the soulful pop troubadour on stage at London’s Brixton Electric earlier this year for a special, one-off performance captured by David Terry Fine of filmmakers Yours Truly, and Bainbridge himself. “I tend to just put something down and see just how many people raise their eyebrows to the arrangement,” he says of the harmonious new record and live show. “And if someone like Dev comes through and he’s like, ‘Oh yeah! it makes sense,’ then I’ll leave it. I think it comes from my listening to DJ mixes.”

Kindness is the inaugural guest in Yours Truly's new artists-in-residence series, featured on their platform. “This time I got to work with more people and move around while I was doing it,” adds Bainbridge of Otherness. “I think that’s what made it freer. And messier, and maybe a little more human.”
