New York-based director Casey Brooks recounts the special moment on El Matador beach in Malibu, California, when she captured 18-year-old dancer and Nashville actor, Keean Johnson, rising out of the waves (or, is he going back in?).
“This was a spontaneous moment. Some dancer friends wanted to take me to this beach on my day off in LA. It was shot on my iPhone 6 because my other camera battery had died! The jittery effect happens when quick movement is reversed, but I love how he becomes so mechanical as the piano speeds up.
“I caught this in one-take, with Keean performing a piece by the choreographer Erica Sobol of collidEdance, which she’d originally choreographed to the Feist song "How Come You Never Go There?” But I think it works beautifully with Philip Glass’s “Mad Rush,” played here by pianist Sally Whitwell.” – Casey Brooks
