“It’s my Brian Ferry moment,” says former Rapture frontman Luke Jenner of his besuited appearance in Ill-Studio’s video for French avant-pop wizard, Joakim. He’s right—though in place of a vampish Jerry Hall is the beguiling model Bianca O’Brien. Between shots of retro technology and minimalist interiors, the works of Joakim’s long-term collaborator, French artist Camille Henrot, slide in and out of shot. “We have a very strong intellectual connection and we both respect our works which makes great collaborations possible,” says Joakim of his fellow expat, who has similarly decamped from Paris to New York. “She recently started this series of drawings called Tropics Of Love: cut-out faded photos of beach scenery printed on paper on which she draws semi-human, semi-animal characters, which came to my mind when I was thinking about the album title.” Joakim’s creative partnership with Ill-Studio started from a t-shirt design on his own Tigersushi Furs clothing label. “The track gave us a pretty precise direction and some specific cultural references,” say Ill-Studio’s Thomas Subreville and Leonard Vernhet. “Art of Noise meets Miami meets Underground Resistance meets Godard meets R. Kelly...We could go on like this forever.” As “Bring Your Love”’s dusky, summer feeling conjures the image of a receding sun while the party carries on, NOWNESS asked Joakim for his perfect soundtrack for warmer climes.
