Daniel Asadi Faezi is a German filmmaker based in Munich who has avidly been directing short films since the age of 17. Born to an Iranian father, his work commonly addresses the politics and pressures surrounding cultures and customs in South Asia.
For his latest project, Faezi looks at the Pashtuns—the largest ethnic group residing on either side of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border—with co-director and writer Sadam Badshah, whose village we visit in this film. In Search Of has been described by the directors as a “cinematic time capsule” of a region that is slowly losing its identity and traditions because of war and globalization.
Faezi directs with the quiet restraint of an ethnographic documentary maker who shows but never tells. Instead, his breath-taking, wind-swept mise-en-scènes are laden with visual metaphors about the Pashtun’s disappearing culture.
