In short film I Know Who I Am, LA-based actor and writer Isaak Adoyi, and photographer and art director Tyler Hicks co-direct follow a man’s attempt to reconnect upon finding himself lost – seeking guidance from nature and his human instincts. One of the winners of Art Partner’s #CreateCOP29 open call, the film underscores humanity's connection to nature as a collective source of life, and the vital need to protect the environment against escalating climate and environmental emergencies.
Also starring as the film’s lead, Adoyi developed the narrative following a visit to his birth country after 13 years in the U.S.A., engaging with the profound beauty of Togo’s landscape, yet confronted by the environmental degradation he witnessed. A call to action for urgent climate adaptation efforts, the film reestablishes man and nature’s synergies to initiate its protagonist’s transformation, entering a dialogue with his ancestors by leaning on teachings from the landscape around him.
Shooting between Malibu and Atlanta, Adoyi and Hicks combine analog and digital footage, employing colour symbolism to convey the emotions that carry each chapter of the journey. Honoring Adoyi’s Togolese heritage through visual and poetic devices, I Know Who I Am intertwines personal ancestry with themes of resilience and reverence, marking the cultural impact of the climate crisis, and the urgency of preserving the environment for future generations.
