Confronted by the biased opinions of the UK media towards those seeking asylum in the summer of 2022, director Jamie Sinclair returned to his hometown of Ashington, Northumberland to illustrate a different side of the story. Transforming his frustration through creative means, he communicates a dialogue sidestepped by mainstream media outlets in short film Hjem – painting a profound and poetic picture of those seeking asylum in the UK, and the hospitality and kindness of the communities that have welcomed them without resistance.

Through time spent with the Northumberland County of Sanctuary – an organization set up to welcome refugees and asylum seekers who found themselves transplanted to North East England – Hjem looks to capture powerful moments of cultural exchange, offering a counter-narrative of positivity and shared enrichment born from times of hardship.
