Shot between Teatro Copacabana and the streets of Rio de Janeiro, dancer-choreographer Léo Walk collaborates with director Nicole Della Costa on short dance film Fuga. Watching the Brazilian city come alive as Carnival approaches, Fuga captures Léo in a fluid state of movement, performing alongside Abu Niang and Brice Jean-Marie – dancers from his company La Marche Bleue.

Observing her home city from their eyes, Della Costa sought to document Léo and the dancers’ first visit to Rio through their own medium. While they wander through Copacabana and Ipanema, improvised choreography takes hold, as a constant means of communication between them, punctuating their interactions with the city and each other.

Soundtracked by Nigerien-Ghanaian musician Mamman Sani, Léo’s fluid choreography translates the explosion of restlessness that moves from the atmosphere to a dialogue between bodies – contrasting the surging energy of the city, and the introspection found in the quiet isolation of the empty theater.
