Saint Laurent Artistic Director Anthony Vaccarello chose seminal auteur Jim Jarmusch to direct the surreal and dreamy visuals of French Water, a new fashion film showcasing the luxury brand’s Summer '21 collection.
Jim Jarmusch cleverly orchestrates a ballet of missed connections, parallel time streams and mystifying outfit changes with an all-star cast featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Julianne Moore, Chloë Sevigny and Indya Moore as the last guests left after a grand dinner party. The audience watches the uncanny proceedings from the perspective of a stalwart waiter, played by musician and digital creative Leo Riley, who serves as a nexus between the elusive dinner guests.
French Water is as much a film about sliding doors as it is about sliding wardrobes; Chloë Sevigny and Julianne Moore float through mirrored walls in search of Indya Moore while Gainsbourg plays the enfant terrible, capturing the rock ‘n’ roll inspiration behind Saint Laurent’s ready-to-wear collection. The sultry post-soirée lookbook of French Water reimagines the luxury brand’s classic color palette with onyx blacks, chic florals and ruffled feather edges.
A few lines from the opening of Edgar Allan Poe’s Eleonora, in which the narrator extols the virtues of being lost in one’s imagination, is a creative adjunct Jim Jarmusch includes to remind the audience of the world he has created; metaphysical, dreamy and surreal. Jim Jarmusch imbues French Water with his characteristic sharp and enigmatic style to capture the unfaltering elegance of the Saint Laurent Summer '21 collection.
