After the successful release of Softcore, a satirical, narrative-driven music video (that features no music) directed by Kristoffer Borgli, we take a look at the filmmaker's hit short film Former Cult Member Hears Music For The First Time.

The Norwegian filmmaker was commissioned by The Face and given a simple brief: to make a “comment on modern culture”.

“The very first piece of inspiration came from an online video about a Christian mum who listened to rap music accidentally in her car with her child,” says Borgli. "She was so upset that she goes home to make a video, where she recites the lyrics and starts crying. And I thought that that itself was a piece of art."

Borgli's film starts as a simple mockumentary but eventually descends into the absurd as it starts to comment on the media and clickbait content.

"I want to flag the problems with sanctimonious altruism in journalism and the media," says the LA-based director whose film was selected for Sundance, Clermont-Ferrand and Vimeo Staff Pick. Discussing social-first content and viral-ready clips, he describes them as “shallow, seemingly humanistic, seemingly well-meaning journalistic endeavours.”
