Dree Hemingway: Little Bow Peep
The Model Heads Up a Cast of Ingenues in a Photography Exhibition by Sofia and Mauro
Dree Hemingway, Anja Rubik and Hanne Gaby Odiele channel their inner Lolitas for the latest series from Paris-based photographic team Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello. The works are on show for the duo's debut solo exhibition La Niña Santa (The Holy Child) at Paris's new contemporary photo gallery latoutepetiteagence. Haunting video installations and an edit of the pair's whimsical color-saturated fashion spreads for the likes of Numéro, Vogue Japan and 10 Magazine are also on view. Sanchez and Mongiello, who both hail from Argentina (and were once married), reference pagan mysticism and Catholicism in their compositions, which depict naive beauties on the brink of corruption. Citing Jorge Luis Borges as an influence, the photographers are drawn to magical realism; a chance encounter before their first editorial commission set the tone for 20 years of collaboration to follow. “My mother has this very old house in Buenos Aires where we were living and in the street outside our door we found this huge statue representing death," says Sanchez. Rather than take the reaper as an ominous sign, they embraced it as a mascot. "It had a black cape and carried a silk pouch and we ended up taking it to the shoot,” she adds.
