Tracing the search for individuality in a world of continuous rapid transformation, American artist Doug Aitken reveals a landscape of diversity on a cinematic journey through the U.S. for Lightscape – a new film-based installation on view at The Shed in New York City.

Taken from the hour-long feature, Doug Aitken’s Lightscape - Factory observes factory workers against their automated, industrialized environment, entering into a rhythmic, kinetic synergy with the machines around them – featuring L.A. Dance Project’s Daphne Fernberger and Krump dancer Kevin “Konkrete” Davis, alongside actor-dancer Nathan Mitchell. A vulnerable, humanistic portrait that considers the hyper-connectivity of modern life, the film captures the blurring of humanity, technology and the environment, where bodies become a direct reflection of their mechanized surroundings through driving, twitching choreography.

Led by a unique musical collaboration with the LA Master Chorale and the LA Phil, alongside sound design by Dražen Bošnjak, the visual and sonic landscapes shift gears as each character’s narrative evolves, guiding a state of transformation through haunting vocals and hardcore techno.
