In 1991 Rankin co-founded Dazed & Confused magazine, and in the 18 years since he has captured a head-spinning array of superstars. For his latest project, the photographer and filmmaker enlisted 70 musicians to revisit their portraits and to destroy, deface and customize them. The results range from decorative to sinister, featuring graffiti, dripped nail polish, glitter, burns and cuts. In a series of accompanying interviews, Rankin talks to Damien Hirst about reworking his friend Joe Strummer’s portrait, Peter Saville tells Jarvis Cocker he’s too tall and Mike Figgis and Marianne Faithfull mull over the moments no one else sees. Destroy/Rankin is published by UK charity Youth Music to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
