Russian producer and filmmaker Igor Bruso makes music under the foreboding name of Deaths. Before evolving his style into the textured electronic melancholy of “Voices,” Bruso spent his early years in punk bands in Prague. Deaths grew out of a subsequent period living in New York, where he also worked for Vice magazine. These days he runs the Deaths project out of Berlin, where their shows are buzzing. “I play live with my ‘Dead Collective’ Tomáš Hribik, Pier Auradon and Yaz Uemura” says Bruso. “The live side of Deaths is truly important to me as our shows are a completely different experience.”
Bruso is signed to UK label Love By Mistake – founded by musical duo IYES – who make a similarly haunting amalgam of dark R&B and electronica. “Love by Mistake is something that’s barely started yet,” says label chief Josh Christopher, one half of IYES alongside Melis Soyaslanová. “However, when IYES formed three years ago, I had an ambitious vision of a ‘creative hotel.’”
While Bruso has directed videos for fellow Love By Mistake act Rude, today’s film for “Voices” is the work of Lubos Rezler. For anyone who has dreamed of being whisked to safety in a 1980s Ford Granada Mark 2 wearing only a nightie, it is something of a dream come true.
